Ford Ka very hot but no warning light?

ok so just bought i lil ka 2000 plate. not been used since january just been parked up. needed two new coil springs but other than that it seemed fine. started straight away etc. couldnt test drive cos of the spprings so bought it and took a gamble. now when i drive it, it gets extremely hot inside, have to wind the windows down. decided to pop the bonnet last night to check it had enough oil and it did. the engine was really really hot to the touch. the water in engine was also steaming. any ideas what could cause thsi and cost of repairs. car hasn't got a temperature gauge but has got a warning light but h=this has never come on. thanks in advance
