How to sew clothes for a homemade doll?

I like making simple rag dolls, but the dresses and bonnets I make for them are always ugly and flimsy. I want to add a little variety, but I'm not very good at sewing clothes yet. So, have you got any tips or tricks for clothing and accessorizing home-made dolls?
